Attention Father’s to be! There is something you should know. Although the birth of your child is life’s most precious gift, there is another exchange that has become popular recently and you better be prepared to know what to give. A push present, or baby bauble, is a gift a father gives to the mother to mark the birth of their child. It is an expectation of moms these days that they deserve something for enduring nine months of morning sickness, swollen feet, ruining their body, and of course the pain of actual labor. Oh the guilt! Push presents are a wonderful way for husbands to thank their baby’s mother for all they've gone through to bring a baby into the world.
Believe it or not, push presents have a long history, even though the idea just became popular in the United States. In the United Kingdom and India, the push present has been around for hundreds of years. There are some claims that these baby baubles have been around since the 1700’s. There is no solid history of when the first push presents began to show up in the U.S., but since about 2009 the idea of giving a push present has gained ground. The popularity of push presents has been attributed to celebrities receiving them. Who can forget the 8-10ct blue tanzanite ring that Jay-Z gave Beyoncé when Blue Ivy was born, worth an estimated $35K. Or perhaps you remember the $12k diamond and pink sapphire necklace Nick Cannon bought Mariah Carey after delivery of their twins –even though that marriage didn’t work out so well, you get the picture. Celebrity influence is huge! So if the rich and famous do it, then why shouldn’t we?
Even before the current craze, there has been no established tradition for giving the gift, other than the present should come from someone close to the new mother. Usually this is the father of the child or the mother’s partner. As with all other gift-giving occasions in the U.S., more people are getting in on the party. Grandmothers, fathers, brothers, and friends are gifting their pregnant friends with small push presents.
The gift should be given before or after the birth, or even in the delivery room. A great idea for a present would be to give the new a piece of jewelry with the new baby’s birthstone. Maybe the baby was born in July then a ruby bracelet would be a perfect gift!
A charm bracelet would also be a great gift giving idea. You can add a charm commemorating the birth and continue to add charms for each milestone.
Rings and pendants are also a great idea. If you are having boy, a blue sapphire ring would make a very thoughtful gift, or for a baby girl, a pink sapphire pendant or Rolex with a pink dial would certainly help the new mom forget the pain of childbirth! Diamonds are always a good choice if you don’t know the sex of the baby.
Sumpters has a wide selection of merchandise and knowledgeable sales associates to help you choose the perfect gift. Even if you don’t believe in this new tradition, my advice would be to buy something anyway and definitely not show up empty handed!
